Sony's newest portable, the PS Vita, will ship on February 22 in the US

Sony announced the price of the PS Vita at this year's E3, and the starting point of $250 was much lower than many of us expected. Now the system's release date has been confirmed for the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe: you will be able to get your hands on the system starting on February 22. Start saving!

"Our first-party studios and army of publishing partners have been extremely hard at work to ensure that PS Vita launches with a vast library of titles that deliver unique gameplay experiences that go beyond any handheld or mobile device on the market," Sony CEO Jack Tretton wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "We have more than 100 games currently in development globally that span many different genres, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, EA Sports’ FIFA, Activision’s Call of Duty, and numerous others that you’ll hear about in the months ahead."

The system will cost $250 for the standard hardware with WiFi connectivity, or $300 for a unit that includes 3G service from AT&T. We've had the chance to sit down with the hardware on a few occasions and we really, really like what we've seen so far. The Vita feels wonderful in the hand, the front and rear touch-panels work well, and the screen is much larger and sharper than it looks in pictures.

Gadget lust switch set to "on."
